Besakih Temple

The temple complex of Besakih, or Pura Besakih is some 25km northeast of Ubud in the village of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, with beautiful views to the ocean. Many Balinese consider Pura Besakih the most important temple in Bali. It is comprised of many temples, with Pura Penataran Agung at the center. Many temple festivals take place at Besakih. On Purnama Kedasa (the full moon around March or April on the Balinese calendar) a big festival called “Ida Betara Turun Kabeh” is held at Pura Penataran Agung, in which the deities of the four cardinal points are invited to descend and be honored with offerings, music, and dance. On this occasion, Balinese Hindus from all over the island will come and pray.

Tanah Lot

This unique temple in southwest Bali is built on a small promontory in the surf of the sea, and is accessible only at low tide. Poisonous snakes live in the nearby caves and act as guardians of the temple. The best time to visit is at sunset, with golden red skies framing the temple as waves crash on the rocks at its base.

Uluwatu Temple

This dramatic temple set on a cliff 80 meters above the sea in the southern part of Bukit Peninsula. It is one of the Sad Kahyangan temples in Bali (six important temples arrayed around Bali). Ulu means 'head', and watu means 'rock'. Nearby is a small dry forest inhabited by monkeys. A good time to visit is sunset. Afterwards you can watch a performance of the Kecak ('Monkey Dance').

Kehen Temple

A beautiful temple located in the foothills of the Bangli Regency, about 40 minutes' drive from Ubud. The temple, laid out in eight terraces, was founded in the 11th century by the kingdom of Bangli, and although it has been often restored since then, it is a fine example of classical Balinese temple architecture, with many fine carvings.

Gunung Kawi

This temple complex is one of Bali's oldest and most spectacular monuments, said to have been built in the 10th century. One of Bali's oldest monuments means carving in the mount. A steep stone stairway leads down into a beautiful valley where you find 10 seven-meter-high memorials or candi carved into the rock face. Four can be found on the west side and five on the eastside of the river. To the south across the valley lies another. Explore the ruins of a temple, said to be the tombs of the king's concubines.

A large holy spring-water temple located in Tampaksiring Village, Gianyar Regency, about 10 km northeast of Ubud. Nearby is one of the palaces of the Indonesian government, whose function is a presidential retreat.

Taman Ayun

Pura Taman Ayun is a royal temple of the former kingdom of Mengwi, located in Mengwi village in Badung Regency. The wide beautiful landscaped garden in the outer courtyard welcomes all visitors. The centerpiece is a splendid roofed gate, or kori agung. The inner courtyard is surrounded by a narrow moat and a path from which visitors may view the shrines and pagoda-like meru. This temple is a revered example of classical Balinese temple architecture and a venue for public events.

The “Royal Court of Justice” Kerta Gosa in KlungkungTaman Ayun

One of the few remaining structures from the royal palace of Klungkung, formerly the most pre-eminent kingdom in Bali, this open pavilion is renowned for its painted ceiling depicting vivid scenes from Hell based on Bima Swarga, a story from the sacred shadow-puppet theater. One can imagine prisoners gazing at the ceiling as they awaited sentencing in this former court of justice.

Tirta Gangga

Tirta Gangga (“Water of the Ganges”) is a well-maintained pool complex built by the last king of Karangasem, Raja Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut, in 1947 on the site of a sacred spring emerging from under a banyan tree. These formal, almost Italian-style water gardens were one of the old raja's weekend retreats.
